Proper Handling and Maintenance of Your Khukuri
The Khukuri, a tool of both beauty and utility, requires special care to ensure it stays in optimal condition. Whether you’re a collector or an active user, maintaining the blade and sheath is essential for its longevity and performance. Here’s how to care for your Khukuri:
Handling the Khukuri
When unsheathing your Khukuri, always exercise caution. Avoid encircling the scabbard with your fingers as you draw the blade. If the blade slips out unexpectedly, it could cause injury to your fingers. Instead, grip the upper edge of the scabbard with your palm and fingers, and gently draw the blade out. Always return the blade to its sheath slowly, ensuring it slides back with a gentle curve.
Lubrication and Cleaning
Since the blade is made from high-carbon steel, it is prone to rust if not properly maintained. To prevent this, keep the blade well-oiled at all times. Make sure to wipe off any fingerprints immediately, as the oil from your skin can accelerate rusting. If you do touch the blade, clean it with a small amount of petrol or oil to remove any residue and protect the steel. If you notice rust forming on the blade, use fine sandpaper or sandstone to gently rub it off. Afterward, clean the blade with oil or petrol, wipe it down with a cloth, and apply a fresh layer of oil to prevent further rust.
Caution
Your Khukuri is a powerful and dangerous weapon. Always handle it with care and respect. Keep it away from children or anyone who may not understand its potential dangers. Avoid exposing the blade to hard surfaces like metal or stone, as this can dull or damage the edge. Also, refrain from leaving the scabbard exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods, as prolonged heat can cause the leather to shrink, making it difficult to sheathe the blade.
